Dengue Fever

A Serious Mosquito-Borne Disease


Symptoms

1. High Fever (39–40°C)

  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Symptoms usually last 4–5 days

2. Bleeding Symptoms

  • Black stool
  • Vomiting
  • Red spots or bleeding under the skin

3. Enlarged Liver

  • Tenderness or pain
  • Around the right upper abdomen

4. Abnormal Blood Circulation

  • Shock symptoms may occur during the fever reduction stage
  • Restlessness
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Bluish lips
  • Weak and rapid pulse
  • Low blood pressure

Treatment

1. Fever Reduction

The recommended medication is Paracetamol.


2. Fluid Replacement

  • Drink oral rehydration solutions frequently
  • Especially in patients with severe dehydration

3. Close Monitoring

If the patient develops:

  • Restlessness
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Palpitations
  • Dizziness or fainting

During the fever reduction period, seek immediate medical attention.


4. Blood Tests

Platelet count and hematocrit tests are necessary to evaluate fluid replacement treatment.


Prevention

1. Environmental Control

Eliminate mosquito breeding sites such as:

  • Standing water areas
  • Water containers
  • Flower vases
  • Ponds and stagnant water sources

2. Personal Protection

  • Wear long-sleeved clothing
  • Wear long pants
  • Apply mosquito repellent
  • Use mosquito nets

3. Chemical Control

  • Use larvicide sand (Abate)
  • Apply mosquito larva control agents in water containers
  • Spray insecticides around homes and breeding areas
