ZIKA VIRUS

A viral infection that can spread to humans
through infected Aedes mosquitoes (mosquito vectors).

High-Risk Groups

People living in or traveling to areas where Zika virus outbreaks have been reported, or those living near mosquito breeding sites, are at increased risk.

Pregnant Women

Zika virus infection during pregnancy may affect the unborn baby and can cause microcephaly (congenital small head syndrome). Pregnant women should consult a doctor immediately if exposure is suspected.

Symptoms

Common symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Skin rash
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Conjunctivitis (red eyes)
  • Fatigue

These symptoms are usually mild and typically last for 2–7 days.

Treatment

Treatment mainly focuses on relieving symptoms, including:

  • Getting plenty of rest
  • Drinking lots of fluids
  • Taking fever-reducing medication (Paracetamol is recommended)
  • Avoiding aspirin, as some medications may be harmful during infection

If symptoms worsen or do not improve, consult a doctor immediately.

Prevention

  1. Eliminate mosquito breeding sites
  2. Wear clothing that covers the body
  3. Apply mosquito repellent
  4. Avoid traveling to outbreak-risk areas
  5. Seek medical attention immediately if infection is suspected
